School is almost out, and many of us are getting ready for summer road trips! While some road trip preparations like packing snacks and gassing up the night before are likely already part of your plan, there are some things we just never think about. Here are some of our favourite family travel tips!
Be sure to not only plan your trip but also travel your PATH! Knowing where you’re going is half the battle; how you plan to get there is the other half. Leaving early, or even at night for longer trips, and planning the route can help save time and headaches!
While your driver may look relaxed over in their seat, remember that driving can be taxing. Making sure they’re well-rested, as well as helping out with drinks, snacks, and navigation can keep your driver up to the task and feeling fresh. On longer trips, it’s a really good idea to split up your driver/co-pilot roles so everyone gets a break after a long stretch. We also NEVER recommend pushing it beyond a reasonable amount of time on the road – if you’re feeling tired, stop and rest!
When you’re traveling with kids, it’s essential to make sure they have something to do. That’s the beauty of crafts, books, and even electronics in limited, healthy doses. It’s important to find a balance and not let the kids go overboard on screen time. Sometimes boredom in a car is exactly what a child needs to get the imagination running and next thing you know, they’ll be lost in their own world of wonderment.
Many families default to the old parents in the front, kids in the back configuration when on road trips. Next time out, try something different, and let one of the older kids ride in the co-pilot seat. It gives them a different point of view and gives them, and you, an opportunity to have different conversations than if you were split up as usual.
Don’t forget about your music selections! Everyone in the family may have their own tastes and preferences. With music streaming apps, creating a playlist that has a little bit of everything for everyone is a great way to keep things fun and inclusive.
Finally, eat AND stay local. Without fail, some of the best places to check out are always the ones with close ties to their local community. Moreover, the people frequenting those places usually have a great understanding of the area and can recommend things worth taking in. All of our Coastal Inns locations are staffed by local experts like these – and they LOVE sharing their secrets.
When it comes to family getaways, Coastal Inns know how much fun getting away can be for your kids, and for the whole family. With locations in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, we’re close to everything you want to SEA and do. Book directly with us and get the best rates, and find your new home away from home.
Happy travels!
