With the Christmas season coming to an end, it seems like life becomes a waiting game until the snow melts and the warm sun comes back to us. If you’re staying at Coastal Inns during the winter months, we encourage you to turn off that TV and get outdoors. It may require a few more layers of clothing, but each of our beautiful Maritime locations has activities that will create amazing memories for you and your loved ones.
Skating
Both Halifax and Moncton have beautiful outdoor rinks on which you can hold hands and enjoy an evening skate, or maybe teach your child to glide on the ice. In Halifax, the Emera Oval has been used for the Canada games and is the size of three hockey rinks. There will always be room for you to enjoy a bit of exercise in the winter sunshine. Moncton has just opened the Ian Fowler Oval in front of the Avenir Centre. It’s in downtown Moncton and is a great spot to get a bit of skating in before a hockey game!
Sledding
While any hill is great for a day of sledding, Halifax opens their famous Citadel Hill for winter fun. Located very close to the downtown area, Citadel Hill has lots of parking and amazing views to take in from the top. Antigonish has Keppoch Mountain, which is great for tobogganing as well. What once was an old ski hill is now a great spot for a sled ride!
Snowshoeing
In Nova Scotia, there are many places to rent snowshoes for a winter adventure, including a few in Halifax. You can then find one of the many Maritime trails to test them out on, or if you’re feeling up for something a bit more daring, try out the snowshoes on Lake Banook in Dartmouth, NS or Keppoch Mountain in Antigonish, both give a different view, but one that’s worth seeing.
Winter Walk
If you only have an hour or so, but still want to get some winter activity in during your stay at Coastal Inns, why not go for a winter stroll? Bundle up, grab a coffee and head out. If you’re staying in Moncton, you can walk the beautiful trails of Centennial Park where you feel like you’re far away from the city, even when you’re in the middle of it. Maybe even bring a camera for some shots of the beautiful snow covered trees!
Farm Living
For a day of family fun, why not visit Broadleaf Ranch in Moncton? Or maybe go for a sleigh ride at Hatfield Farm just outside of Halifax! Farms are a great place to visit in the winter and usually offer a bit of fun for the whole family. Who knows, maybe they’ll offer hot chocolate and cookies to warm you up!
Winterfest
If you happen to be in Sackville on the correct winter weekend, you can join in on the fun of Winterfest! This requires quite a bit of time as there is a lot to see, but it’s a great activity that will get the kids off of electronics and onto the ice slides!
Christmas is not the only exciting part about winter and if you decide to embark on one of these winter adventures, we hope that you’ll stay with us at Coastal Inns! We’ll give you a warm bed after a day in the snow!
