Spring is finally gaining some ground in Atlantic Canada. The ground is WET, road crews are getting out to fill the winter potholes, and the community calendars are filling up quickly. This is one of the best times of year to hit the road for a quick weekend getaway before the busy summer season truly begins.
Whether you are looking for a lively music festival, a new culinary favourite, or a quiet hike along the coast, plenty is happening right outside our doors. Coastal Inns is ready to be your home base as you get out and explore what is new in our corners of the Maritimes.
Moncton and Dieppe
The Hub City is buzzing with a mix of culture and great food this month. The Frye Festival runs from April 24 to May 3, bringing a fantastic lineup of literary events to various venues. For the foodies, the annual Taco Week takes place from May 1 to May 10, which is an excellent excuse to visit several local restaurants and try their unique creations. Later in the month, music fans can head to the Avenir Centre on May 26 to see the legendary band, The Guess Who.
Sackville
Music is the main theme in Sackville for the next few weeks. The Sackville Music Festival wraps up on May 2, followed shortly by a high-energy East Coast Kitchen Party featuring Signal Hill at Jennings Hall on May 8. Immediately after, the Regional Music Convention takes place at Mount Allison from May 9 to May 12. Staying at Coastal Inn Sackville puts you right near the campus and the downtown core, making it easy to catch every performance.
Halifax
Halifax is always a great spot for a spring stroll. The city-wide Burger Bash happens April 16-26, giving you a chance to sample special creations at local eateries while you explore. It is a perfect time to walk the boardwalk from Pier 21 to the Casino, or perhaps tour the Citadel Hill National Historic Site. If the spring weather is a bit damp, the Halifax Central Library and the Discovery Centre offer plenty of indoor interest.
Antigonish
If you enjoy supporting local artisans and community causes, Antigonish has two great events coming up in May. The Hello Spring Art & Pottery Market takes place at The Arts House on May 2. It is a wonderful spot to find a unique gift or something new for your home. On May 9, Mayfest returns in support of St. Martha’s Hospital Auxiliary, which is always a highlight for the local community.
Digby
For those who prefer a quieter pace, the Digby area offers some incredible natural sights as the weather warms. The Balancing Rock Trail is a well-groomed 2.5 km walk that leads to a viewing platform of a basalt column that seems to defy gravity. You can also spend an afternoon visiting the “Beacons by the Bay.” There are nine lighthouses in the Digby and Islands area, many of which have scenic coastal parks and interpretive panels perfect for a spring picnic.
